AVEZZANO Nerikomi & Neriage Vessel #A2
This ceramic object brings together two techniques, nerikomi and neriage, arranged in a deliberate dialogue between interior and surface. The interior of the form and its structural core are created using the nerikomi technique, composed of carefully arranged layers of pigmented clay that form distinct, rhythmic bands of black and ivory. These linear structures are segmented and oriented in shifting directions, evoking geological cross-sections or maps of sedimentary deposits.
The exterior surface is formed through neriage, where colored clays are blended more freely. Deep tones of graphite, anthracite, and muted black dominate, interrupted by irregular passages of cool gray and milky white. This organic, fluid surface contrasts with the controlled geometry of the interior, emphasizing the tension between precision and natural process.
The form is low, wide, and open, with a subtly irregular rim that reinforces its sculptural presence. The object exists between vessel and sculpture, uniting structural discipline with material expression and referencing landscape, time, and the traces embedded within the clay.
