HOLLOW Nerikomi & Neriage Vessel #A2
This ceramic object combines the techniques of nerikomi and neriage in a deliberate dialogue between interior and surface. The interior of the form is created using nerikomi, composed of precisely arranged layers of pigmented clay that produce a strong linear pattern in shades of black, graphite, and ivory. These bands shift in direction and rhythm, recalling geological cross-sections or sedimentary strata.
The exterior surface is formed through neriage, where colored clays are blended more freely. Deep tones of graphite and muted black dominate, interrupted by irregular passages of light gray and milky white. The fluid, organic character of the neriage contrasts with the controlled, structured order of the nerikomi visible within.
The form is sculptural, asymmetrical, and open, with carved openings that guide the eye into the interior and reveal the inner structure as an integral part of the composition. The object exists between vessel and sculpture, balancing precision and natural process while referencing landscape, material, and time embedded in clay.
