HOLLOW Nericomi & Neriage Vessel #H3
This ceramic object combines the techniques of nerikomi and neriage in a deliberate dialogue between interior structure and exterior surface.
The interior is constructed using nerikomi, composed of precisely layered pigmented porcelain that forms a strong linear pattern in tones of black, graphite, deep blue-black, and ivory. The bands shift in direction and density, creating a rhythmic stratification reminiscent of geological cross-sections embedded within the body of the form.
The exterior is shaped through neriage, where colored clays are blended more fluidly. Smoky graphite, muted black, and milky white merge into cloud-like, mineral formations. Unlike a fully matte surface, the exterior is finished with an irregular clear glaze, applied unevenly so that certain areas catch and reflect light while others remain more subdued. This subtle variation introduces a shifting surface tension, enhancing depth and movement across the sculptural volume.
The form is asymmetrical and open, with a carved, flowing aperture that draws the eye inward. The opening is not centered but cut dynamically, revealing the structured interior as an essential component of the composition. The object exists between vessel and sculpture, balancing control and fluidity, precision and erosion — a landscape condensed into porcelain.
